Ancient Romans had festivals for almost every occasion and the love of gathering together in celebration continues to this day in Rome, where events and gatherings are a frequent occurrence with a wide variety of different options to choose from.
Starting at the very beginning of the year there are traditional celebrations on January 1st. After the previous night’s celebrations, New Year’s Day is a fun filled event with a parade which goes along the Via della Conciliazione and finishes at St. Peter’s Square where the Pope gives his New Year blessings for all.
The Epiphany celebration also takes place in January and is a time when locals and visitors commemorate the Roman Catholic Epiphany in and around the Piazza Novana. The toy fair is a highlight for kids and grownups as well.
Film lovers will be impressed with February’s offering of the Rome Independent Film Festival. Usually showcasing more than 40 films from over 25 countries, screenings are held at Ripa Hotel, Cinema Pasquino and the Cinema Roma.
March is the month for chocolate lovers as Eurochocolate comes to town. More than 500 exhibitors come to Rome to sell their wares and this cocoa fuelled event even features a chocolate themed film festival so fans of both film and chocolate will be in seventh heaven.
Visitors to Rome can participate in the Good Friday Procession at Easter. This is a traditional religious event where all participants join the Via Crucis (Station of the Cross) procession starting at the Colosseum and finishing at Mount Palatino. The procession is a re-enactment of the route which Christ's body was carried, from the cross to his tomb.
In the month of April the Painters in Via Margutta event is held. Exactly 100 artists are selected to display and sell their creative masterpieces along Via Margutta, an area renowned for its resident painters and creative feel.
June and July are host to Expo Tevere, a festival which takes place between Sant'Angelo bridge and Cavour bridge, and remains open from early until late at night. A selection of traditional goods are on sale and this is a great stop for an authentic treat.
September is a busy month with the International Urban Theatre and La Notte Bianca usually taking place early on and the Roma Europa Festival lasting all month.
Rome Film Festival is the highlight of October. With around 600 screenings of first-class films this annual event draws crowds of movie lovers year after year.
An equally popular event is Rome Jazz Festival which is held in November. Various venues host performances of international names so take yourself off to Rome during this month if jazz is your passion.
Last on the calendar is La Festa di San Silvestro, taking place on New Year’s Eve. Offering an abundance of family fun and excitement, this event is held at the Piazza del Popolo.
When booking your trip, remember Rome Hotels may be busier during major festivals so the earlier you organise everything the better.
