Santa Maria Novella (Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella) is often overlooked by tourists. This perfumery/pharmacy is located in an unassuming building at number 16 Via Della Scala.

The history of the pharmacy dates back to the 13th century. In 1221, Dominican friars began to mix and sell their essences, tonics and elixirs from their monastery. Shortly thereafter, the friars gained recognition as world class perfumers.

During the 15th century, some of these formulations were sent as far away as China. Famous patrons included the Medici family. Legend says that Caterina de'Medici took an essence to Paris. Later, Giovanni Paolo began producing the same essence in Cologne, Germany.

A few steps into the salesroom of the perfumery will transport you back in time. The fragrances that waft through the air of the perfumery are truly incredible. Over the centuries, the essences percolated into the walls of the monastery. They remain there today, with unbelievable potency.

In the salesroom, you can see a variety of tools and implements that were once used in the perfume and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The old wood cabinets and counters are reminiscent of old apothecaries.

Today, you can find a variety of products at the perfumery. Potpourri, aged in clay vessels is available for purchase. Skin and hair products, as well as perfumed powders, cologne, soaps and bubble bath are also available.

Santa Maria Novella's Dominican friars were expert chemists, herbalists and botanists. Old recipes have been preserved in perfumery archive. It is believed that some of these old recipes may enjoy a revival in today's cosmetic and medical industries.
