Salt dough christmas decoration

Authour: mykidcrafts.com

Play dough is great fun and a project can be adapted to any level of skills. This is what I chose for my son to do as his first complete project.

This is how my little boy is preparing for Christmas this year. We start early so that we have time for mistakes and he can enjoy a project when mummy has more time. These will stay in good shape as long as they are kept dry. A final coating of clear drying glue will help give a good finishing result. (Lacquer is also good if a grown up is doing it).

Ingredients:

1 cup salt
1 cup water
2 cups plain flour
a little lemon juice (optional...it makes final result harder)
a spoon oil (optional...it makes the dough easier to handle as it breaks less)

Step 1

Put all ingredients in a bowl and let your child mix. Add more flour or water if necessary to get the right consistency. I let my boy deal with the messy mixture until it started hold together. Then I transferred it for him on a floured surface and gave him a piece at a time to play with. Small pieces are easier to handle for little hands. At this point he just enjoys playing with the play dough.

Step 2

Put all pieces back together and wrap in a plastic bag and leave to rest for about half hour.

Step 3

We squashed the dough into a flat sheet about half a cm thick. I use baking paper underneath as it helps pick it up later since he hammered it flat with his fist. I must say working with salt dough is a great stress reliever. We used star shaped biscuit cutters to cut out the little stars. We chose a small cutter. If a larger cutter is used drying time would increase accordingly.

Salt dough can be air dried if you have a dry sunny windowsill. You can over dry them at a very low temperature until they are hardened (60º). I chose to use the microwave. 15 minutes at a time on the defrosting setting, until they were satisfactorily dry.

Step 4

Once dry cover the area and enjoy painting.
Best results are achieved if a basic colour is chosen and the salt dough shapes are generously covered and left to dry.
Details do not necessarily have to be painted. Depending on the effect you are looking for little decorative items can be glued on such as glitters or little googly eyes from the haberdashery etc… or just cut out shapes from sweet foil wrappers.
